Description
Shawarma is a Middle Eastern sandwich made with marinated meat wrapped in steamed pita or flatbread. While the name might sound foreign, there’s little chance you haven’t seen a shawarma where you are. Cafes that sell Middle Eastern fast-food sandwiches, like the shawarma and gyro, are popular at malls and the food trucks that populate city streets. If you like fairs and carnivals, you’ve likely seen the beef, lamb or chicken marinating on a rotating spit while a cook slices off slivers for making sandwiches. Now, you can make your own Middle-Eastern inspired sandwich at home with this shawarma chicken pita recipe. And you don’t need a fancy vertical rotisserie either. You can make this sandwich using fully-cooked Tyson® Chicken Breast Strips…
This chicken shawarma pita recipe has many of the same ingredients you’ll find in authentic shawarma pitas from Middle Eastern countries, like chopped tomatoes and Greek yogurt.
Tyson® Chicken Breast Strips are made with white meat chicken. And since it has no additional seasonings, it’s that much easier to make homemade shawarma that tastes just like authentic MIddle Eastern pita sandwiches, with cumin, paprika, garlic, and black pepper.
Interestingly, what makes this shawarma chicken pita work is the olive oil. No, olive oil is not a typical ingredient in real kebab shops. But if you don’t own a vertical rotisserie, which is designed for the meat marinate in its own juices — and we’ll assume you don’t — one of the best ways to duplicate the flavor in chicken breast strips is by sauteing the chicken strips in a pan for a few minutes with a little bit of olive oil.
Ingredients
- 1 cup Tyson® Grilled & Ready® Chicken Breast Strips (thawed, chopped)
- 1/2 tsp. olive oil
- 4 tsp. lemon juice
- 1/2 tsp. curry powder
- 1/4 tsp. cumin (ground)
- 1/2 tsp. garlic powder
- 1 pinch black pepper (coarse ground)
- 1/4 tsp. paprika
- 1/4 cup greek yogurt
- 3 Tbsp. feta cheese (crumbled)
- 1 pinch kosher salt
- 1 1/2 cups romaine lettuce leaves (sliced into ribbons)
- 4 Tbsp. tomatoes (chopped small)
- 2 pita breads (cut in half)
Directions
- Place the chicken strips, olive oil, 1 tsp. lemon juice, curry, cumin, garlic, black pepper, and paprika in a large storage bag. Shake bag to evenly combine and coat all ingredients. Refrigerate overnight to marinate.
- In a separate storage bag make yogurt sauce by placing yogurt, 3 tsp. lemon juice, feta cheese, and salt. Shake and squeeze bag to evenly combine all ingredients. This step can be prepared as you are assembling, or you can make ahead of time and place in the refrigerator overnight with the marinating chicken.
- Before serving, add lettuce to the yogurt sauce bag and mix to evenly coat lettuce with the other ingredients, making a creamy romaine salad. Set aside.
