Description
Satisfying, slurpable wonton soup is a classic Cantonese dish that you need in your repertoire! While traditional wonton soup uses dried shrimp for umami, this version goes with a bit of readily available oyster sauce. Store-bought wonton wrappers and broth make it easy to whip up the heartwarming soup. Look for square wonton wrappers (round wrappers are meant for potsticker-style dumplings). If the wrappers come frozen, defrost them for about 2 hours at room temperature. The recipe is a Yummly original created by Diana Kuan.
Ingredients
- 1 lb. baby bok choy
- 3 scallions
- 1 piece fresh ginger (small)
- 1/2 lb. large peeled and deveined raw shrimp (26-35 per lb.)
- 1/2 lb. ground pork
- 2 Tbsp. soy sauce
- 1 Tbsp. toasted sesame oil
- 1 pkg. wonton wrappers (square, about 50 wrappers)
- 8 cups reduced-sodium chicken broth
- 1 Tbsp. oyster sauce
- 1 tsp. salt (plus more to taste)
Directions
- Trim ends from bok choy and separate the leaves. Cut scallions into thin rounds about 1/4 inch thick, separating darker green and white parts. Peel ginger and grate using a Microplane or the finest setting on your box grater or cheese grater until you have about 1 tsp. Set ingredients aside.
- Finely chop shrimp. In a large bowl, combine shrimp, pork, scallion whites, ginger, soy sauce, and sesame oil to create the filling.
- Lay wonton wrappers on a clean work surface. Have a small dish of water next to you. Set out several wrappers at a time in a single layer (keep the others covered) and place about 1 tsp. of filling in the center of each. Dip your finger in the water and wet the edges of each wrapper.
