Description
Comfort food alert! A tasty combo of ricotta, mozzarella, Parmesan, and pesto goes into these tender pasta shells, with ground beef, marinara, and more cheese on top. Keep the recipe in mind for special suppers and for any family weeknight meal. The dish is freezer-friendly, so you can assemble it, freeze, then thaw in the refrigerator overnight and bake as directed. The recipe is a Yummly original created by Ashley Strickland Freeman.

- 1/2 tsp. salt (divided, plus more for pasta water if you like)
- 1 pkg. jumbo pasta shells (12 oz. per pkg.)
- 1 lb. ground beef
- 1 tsp. Italian seasoning
- 1/2 tsp. fennel seeds
- 1/2 tsp. black pepper (divided)
- 1 large egg
- 15 oz. part-skim ricotta cheese
- 6 Tbsp. pesto (store-bought, 3.5 oz.)
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese (8 oz., divided)
- 2/3 cup grated Parmesan cheese (2 oz., divided)
- 1 jar marinara sauce (24 oz. per jar)
- fresh basil leaves (for serving, optional)

Directions
- Preheat oven to 400°F with a rack set in the upper third.
- Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil (or omit the salt if you prefer). Count out 24 pasta shells from package. Boil pasta 9 minutes, then drain. Pro tip: Cooking the pasta a couple of minutes less than the package directions ensures that the pasta doesn't get mushy and makes it easier to stuff.
- Heat a large frying pan over medium-high heat. Add ground beef, Italian seasoning, fennel seeds, and 1/4 teaspoon each salt and pepper. Cook until beef is browned and crumbly, stirring with a wooden spoon to break up beef, about 5 minutes.
