How the Yummly Smart Thermometer works

Why try a smart meat thermometer, you may ask? In case you’re new to the concept, you can get the cooking results you want, every time, with the completely wireless Yummly Smart Thermometer, which works with your oven, grill, stovetop, or smoker. The thermometer has preset programs for multiple types of meat, fish, and poultry to eliminate the guesswork and make multitasking easy.

On the Yummly app on your phone or tablet, just tap what you’re cooking, choose the doneness you prefer, and follow the guide to insert the thermometer into your food. Then let the app, connected via Bluetooth, keep an eye on things while you do … well, whatever!

With its three temperature sensors, the thermometer tracks your cooking from up to 150 feet away and sends alerts to your phone when your food is ready. The app will tell you when it’s time to flip the food and remove it from the heat, and how long to let it rest before serving.

The latest version of the thermometer also gives you the option to save your favorite cooking sessions so you can easily repeat them another time.

FAQs for new protein settings

Let’s sink our teeth into the new settings for the thermometer.

What are the new proteins for the Yummly Smart Thermometer?

The latest version of the Yummly Smart Thermometer, model # YTE010W5MB, includes settings for four new kinds of fish (cod, halibut, swordfish, and tuna) and for wild game (venison and elk).

Does the Yummly thermometer you already have support the new proteins?

No, the new fish and wild game settings are only with the latest version of the thermometer. But original and new versions of the thermometer all have settings for meat (beef, pork, and lamb), poultry (chicken, turkey, and duck), and salmon. And if you have the original version of the thermometer, you can still cook the new proteins using Manual mode.

What did we learn in testing at Yummly?

As I was saying, we cooked up loads of the new proteins at Yummly to build our findings into the latest version of the thermometer and guarantee a seamless experience for you. We wanted to answer important questions like, “What’s a perfect medium-rare for tuna (120°F), halibut (125°F), and venison (140°F),” and “How much does fish rise in temperature after it comes off the heat"? (usually about 10°F).

Now just put the tuna on the grill and let the Yummly app take over. You’ll get an alert when it’s time to remove the fish from the heat. (For medium-rare, that will be at 110°F, and after the tuna rests for a few minutes, the final temperature will rise to 120°F.)
